The Need for Doulas in Healthcare

It’s not uncommon for pregnant people to seek the help of doula–a person who provides emotional and physical support to you during your pregnancy and childbirth. This used to be provided by nurses and midwives, but staffing issues and the medicalization of birthing has too often pushed out this important part of childbirthing. The same thing has been happening with end of life care, with death doulas–people who will stay with someone who is dying and their families–becoming more common. Emilie Adams is a birth doula who decided to move this concept into navigating health care because it has become so complex and confusing. HealthCetera producer and host, Diana J. Mason, PhD, RN, talked with Adams about doulas and a service she has launched called My Health Doula that aims to guide people through what has often become a  challenging experience. This interview first aired on HealthCetera in the Catskills on WIOX Radio on September 27, 2023.
