How We Live, How We Die

Amy Berman, RN

Amy Berman, RN

Amy Berman is a registered nurse and Senior Program Officer at the John A. Hartford Foundation who has just gone public with the news that she has been diagnosed with an incurable breast cancer that has metastasized. She shares her experience with seeking information about treatment options and how some of the health care providers with whom she interacted were incredibly dismissive of her goals. Her story is on the John A. Hartford Foundation’s blog, Health AGEnda (the foundation focuses on improving the health care of older adults), and includes her commitment to using her remaining time in this life to “call on our health care institutions and professionals to make a real commitment to listening to their patients.” She points out that this is about “patient-centered care“–something that her experience painfully illustrates is too often empty rhetoric.  This is MUST reading and sharing with anyone who cares about the failings of our health care system and EVERY health care provider. Amy will continue to blog about her experiences and perspectives.
