Occupy Health Care

Unless a lot of people miss their guess, Thursday is the big day for the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act.

On the Occupy Wall Street Web site, I found that there’s already a plan to rally tomorrow “against layoffs, healthcare cuts, and hospital closings at Downstate Hospital, a state hospital in Central Brooklyn that handled 75,000 ER visits last year and plays a vital role in the community.”

There’s also a call to rally for “Medicare for All” at the closed St. Vincent’s Hospital (West 13th St @ 7th Avenue, Manhattan) on Friday, June 29th, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm.

Have you given any thought to what you might be doing tomorrow (or the day after) if the Supremes give health care reform the thumbs down? We’d love to hear from you!

By the way, the progressive blog Talking Points Memo has a good two-minute video on how Americans view the SCOTUS as well as a nice post showing just how far to the right the nation’s top court has been leaning.

National Public Radio has a decent Q & A on “potential outcomes” of various possible Court decisions.

Oh, and… how do you like this photo?

  • What will I do if (if!) SCOTUS fails to uphold the ACA? As Betty Rollin wrote in a different context: “First, you cry.” Then I will redouble my efforts to support organizations advocating for universal healthcare.

  • I hope a smile has replaced the anticipation of tears.
