We’re stuck at 50,000 new HIV infections per year in USA.

In the United States, we stay stuck at about 50,000 new infections of HIV per year. Among young gay men between 2008 and 2010, there was a 22 percent increase in the rate of new infections. If you’re a young gay man of color, then those rates might be worse.

Thursday, 12/5 on Healthstyles, at 11:00 PM on WBAI 99.5 FM Pacifica Radio, producer and host Barbara Glickstein interviews Jeremiah Johnson, HIV prevention and policy coordinator at the Treatment Action Group (TAG), an independent AIDS research and policy think tank fighting for better treatment, a vaccine, and a cure for AIDS.

Mr. Johnson discusses the complexities around HIV prevention and misconceptions about those living with the virus or those most at risk for it. We discuss how fear and stigma still exist in communities, whether fear-based campaigns really work, and how social determinants and the lack of cultural competency between the health care community and those at the greatest risk for HIV is a huge barrier to prevention of HIV.
