HomeHealthParental Leave

Parental Leave

The United State is one of the only high income countries to ensure that families get a healthy start through paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child. Only 23% of civilian workers get paid maternity leave, even though it’s becoming a standard benefit for full time employees in moderate to well-paying jobs, but not for hourly or low-wage workers. Only 13% of civilian workers get paid paternity leave, despite the benefits that family leave provides for families and employers. HealthCetera in the Catskills producer and host, Diana J. Mason, PhD, RN, FAAN, discusses this issue with Sherrie Flynt Wallington, PhD, associate professor in the Policy, populations and Systems Department at the George Washington University School of Nursing and the Milken Institute School of Public Health. She co-authored a paper on paternity leave that was published by the Milbank Quarterly in December 2022. This interview aired on HealthCetera in the Catskills on WIOX Radio on April 5, 2023.
