The Effects of Poverty and Food Insecurity on Health

There’s lots of poverty in rural communities, including in the Catskill Region of New York State. The impact of poverty on the health and wellbeing of people and whole communities is often underestimated. But the evidence shows that poverty is associated with food insecurity and other factors that can dramatically affect health. Dr. Diana Mason, PhD, RN, talks with Dr. Laura Samuel, PhD, RN,  Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, who has been researching the relationship between poverty and health. She was a co-author on a paper that came out earlier this year in JAMA on what’s called food insecurity and cognitive impairment in older adults. This program first aired on HealthCetera in the Catskills on WIOX Radio on June 28, 2023.
